A Taxi Through Syria 1971

The Road From Damascus Through Homs to Hama, Syria

Given all that’s happening in Syria these days, I thought perhaps you might appreciate a different glimpse not generally offered by the media.  These nine photos were taken along the road between Damascus and Hama…where we passed by villages in the province of Homs and spent time in Hama. Hama has some of the largest water wheels in the world…up to 60 feet tall.  These “noria” were built during the Byzantium Empire (or perhaps earlier) to lift water into aquaducts. A few are still working today.
